Combination skin: controlling the T-zone without over-drying

Combination skin is the most common skin type. It is characterized by an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) with enlarged pores and normal or dry cheeks.

There are approximately 5 times more sebaceous glands in the T-zone than on the cheeks. This uneven distribution of sebaceous glands is genetically determined. In addition, the thickness of the epidermis differs from one area of the face to another.

Factors that can worsen the condition:

  • Unsuitable skincare — using the same product on the entire face.
  • Seasonal changes — in summer, the T-zone becomes oilier, while in winter, the cheeks may become drier.
  • Hormones — in the second phase of the cycle, the T-zone may become oilier.

The T-zone is rich in sebaceous glands — up to 900 glands/cm² on the nose, compared to approximately 100 glands/cm² on the cheeks. The density of sebaceous glands varies depending on the area of the face; these glands are more sensitive to androgens and stress, so combination skin needs a differentiated approach.

    Daily skincare routine steps for combination skin

    1. In the morning, a balancing cleansing gel or foam is suitable, while in the evening — double cleansing.
    2. At the exfoliation step, enzyme powders, gommage peels, and acids are recommended (BHA for the T-zone — 3 times a week, PHA for the entire face — 2 times a week).
    3. Toning the skin to restore its pH after cleansing.

    Zone-specific serums:

    • T-zone: niacinamide 10% or retinol 0.3%.
    • Cheeks: a hydrating serum, for example with peptides.

    Or you can use one universal serum for the entire face.

    Zone-specific creams:

    • T-zone: a lightweight gel-cream.
    • Cheeks: a nourishing cream with oils or ceramides.
    • Or one universal cream.

    The morning routine should finish with an SPF cream.

    Important! In the warm season, for combination and oily skin, after serum it may be enough to use only SPF cream, without an additional moisturizer.

    As extra care for the T-zone, you can use mattifying blotting papers and transparent mattifying powders.

    What to avoid and common skincare routine mistakes

    ❌ Aggressive products for oily skin applied to the entire face can overly dry out the cheeks.
    ❌ Dense creams applied to the entire face can clog or overload the pores in the T-zone.
    ❌ Exfoliating only the T-zone can lead to uneven skin texture.
    ❌ Ignoring the differences between facial areas — combination skin needs a differentiated approach.

    Common skincare mistakes

    1. One-size-fits-all approach — using the same cream on the entire face.
    2. Focusing only on the T-zone — the cheeks are left without the hydration they need.
    3. Over-drying the T-zone — this can trigger the skin to produce even more sebum as compensation.
    4. Avoiding oils completely — the cheeks may need more nourishing care.
