Korean or European SPF cream?

Sunscreen is the foundation without which any skincare routine loses its meaning. But when it comes time to choose, a dilemma appears: should you go for a technological Korean product or a classic option from a European pharmacy?

In this article, we analyze the differences, debunk the myths and help you choose the ideal SPF from the MoonGlow range.

Many people avoid SPF because they remember old formulas: sticky, whitish and prone to causing breakouts. The problem is that without protection, the skin suffers from photoaging — wrinkles and pigmentation spots.

What is the difference?

The Korean and European approaches are shaped by different skincare mindsets:

Korea: SPF is part of everyday makeup and the “glass skin” effect. It should feel light and invisible.
Europe: SPF is often perceived as a medical necessity. The focus is on maximum protection in extreme conditions, such as the beach or mountains.

Here is the main difference:

European sunscreens, especially in the mass-market segment, still often use older-generation filters such as avobenzone (Avobenzone). Their main drawback is instability. Under sun exposure, they start losing their protective properties after just 1.5–2 hours. In addition, avobenzone often causes stinging around the eyes and irritation on sensitive skin.

Korean brands have almost completely switched to new-generation chemical filters (Uvinul A Plus, Tinosorb S/M, Uvinul T 150). They are photostable, do not break down quickly in the sun for 6–8 hours in urban conditions, do not irritate the eye area and allow for lightweight, lotion-like textures.

How to read SPF labels (Asia vs Europe)

For sunscreen to work effectively, it is important to understand what type of radiation it protects against. The main rays that pass through the ozone layer are of two types: UVB (which causes burns) and UVA (which penetrates deeply and accelerates skin aging). Here is how they are labeled in different regions:

Asian system (Korea, Japan):

  • SPF (Sun Protection Factor) — protection against UVB rays.
  • PA (Protection Grade of UVA) — level of protection against UVA rays. It is marked with “plus signs.” Ideally, choose PA+++ or PA++++.

European system:

  • SPF — as everywhere else, indicates protection against sunburn.
  • PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening) — the European UVA protection index. A good level is considered 8–16+.

On many European packages, you may see the UVA symbol inside a circle — this means that UVA protection is at least one-third of the declared SPF value.

Additional labels:

  • Broad Spectrum — broad-spectrum protection (both UVA and UVB).
  • HEV — protection against blue light (phone and monitor screens).
  • IRA — protection against infrared radiation.

Explaining what is myth and what is reality: “Korean SPF is only for Asian skin”

There is a common misconception that Korean sunscreens are created specifically for the characteristics of Asian skin and that they “do not work” on European skin.

This is a myth.

  • Ultraviolet rays affect everyone in the same way — UVA and UVB rays affect skin cells regardless of ethnicity.
  • Universal filters — Korean brands use modern chemical filters such as Tinosorb and Uvinul, as well as mineral filters, which pass international certifications and are tested on different phototypes.
  • Texture is the solution for everyone — Korean formulas were among the first to move away from the “white mask” effect, turning SPF into a comfortable product for daily use in the city.

What should the cream formula contain?

A modern, high-quality sunscreen is not just a mix of filters. According to professional standards, the formula should be balanced. At MoonGlow, we choose products that contain everything necessary:

UV filters: the foundation of protection — UVB + UVA.
Boosters: ingredients that enhance the action of filters, allowing them to be used in lower concentrations without losing effectiveness.
Emollients and solvents: help the cream apply evenly, prevent pilling and make it feel pleasant on the skin.
Antioxidants: neutralize free radicals that may still penetrate the skin.
Anti-pollution ingredients: protect cells from urban smog and dust particles, which is especially important for people living in large cities.

A good modern SPF not only protects but also cares for the skin when the formula is enriched with:

Niacinamide: helps even out skin tone and regulate excess sebum.
Centella asiatica: soothes the skin and is one of the star ingredients of Korean skincare products.
Hyaluronic acid: hydrates and can replace a day cream.
Vitamins E and C: support the action of filters by neutralizing free radicals.

Old-generation filters vs new-generation filters

Old generation — often found in the European mass-market segment: filters such as avobenzone are unstable. Under sun exposure, they oxidize, lose their protective efficiency and may increase the amount of free radicals, contributing to photodermatitis. Strict reapplication every 2 hours is required.

New generation — the gold standard in Korean cosmetics: filters such as Tinosorb S/M, Uvinul A Plus and Uvinul T 150 are photostable. They do not break down quickly, provide broad-spectrum protection and are suitable even for very sensitive skin.

What to avoid and common mistakes

To avoid: old-generation filters and filters with toxic potential, such as Benzophenone-3, Homosalate, Avobenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane), which can overload the skin with free radicals, as well as alcohol at the beginning of the ingredient list, especially if the skin is prone to dryness.

Common mistakes: applying too little product — follow the “two-finger rule” and apply it 15–20 minutes before leaving the house — as well as skipping proper SPF removal in the evening with a two-step cleansing routine.

In the evening, make sure to use a cleansing oil. New-generation filters adhere well to the skin, and a simple cleansing foam will not remove them completely. This is one of the most common mistakes that can lead to breakouts.
